Introduction
The Pancyprian Athletic Association of Small Boat Owners operates their own School of Sailing and Navigation, which in 2011 has been certified by the American Sailing Association to present their ASA programmes awarding the successful students the respective ASA certificates.
Further to the subjects covered by the ASA, the programme gives emphasis to specific subjects which specifically apply to the Mediterranean area conditions, to regulations that apply to Europe and to subjects or issues which through the experience of the School’s members are considered to require special attention.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
In-class lessons which cover theoretical subjects for sailing and sailing boats, terminology and names, issues about regulations and security, risk avoidance and dealing with emergency situations, navigation and seamanship,
Practical lessons on a sailing boat during which the in-class subjects are applied and demonstrated, the participants familiarise themselves with the sailing boat and the sea and learn how to follow a steady course and change course according to the destination and conditions, recognise boat parts and equipment and handle sails under different conditions, learn to depart from and arrive to a berth and to anchor a boat and leave an anchorage.
In parallel the participants are taught how to tie the various nautical knots and what is the use of each one of them.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
The programme is divided into three sections and for each section the participants are evaluated for their skills during the practical lessons and take a written examination and, if successful, they receive the respective certification.
ASA 101 - BASIC KEELBOAT SAILING
Learn to skipper a sloop-rigged keelboat by day in light to moderate winds (up to 15 knots) and moderate sea conditions. Knowledge of basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards.
Times: Four 2-hour in-class lessons – weekdays and Two 4-hour lessons on the boat in the sea – weekends. At the end of the programme, on separate days, the participants are given a 2-hour course review and finally take a written examination on theory. Their technical skills are evaluated during the practical lessons.
Participation prerequisite: None.
ASA 103 - BASIC COASTAL CRUISING
Learn to skipper a sloop-rigged keelboat by day in moderate winds (up to 20 knots) and sea conditions. Knowledge of cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, main and auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather interpretation, safety and seamanship.
Times: Four 2-hour in-class lessons – weekdays and Two 4-hour lessons on the boat in the sea – weekends. At the end of the programme the participants are given a 2-hour course review and finally take a written examination on theory. Their technical skills are evaluated during the practical lessons.
Participation prerequisite: Successful evaluation and passing of the written examination of ASA101.
ASA 104 - BAREBOAT CRUISING
Learn to skipper a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered keelboat of up to 50 feet in length for multi-day cruising along coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and respective sea conditions. Knowledge of provisioning, galley operations, boat systems, main and auxiliary engine operation, routine maintenance procedures, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation including basic chart plotting and GPS operation, methods for anchor mooring, docking skills, man overboard procedures and health & safety, emergency operations and meteorology.
Times: Five 2-hour in-class lessons – weekdays and Two 4-hour lessons on the boat in the sea – weekends plus a 6-hour night practical on a Saturday night. At the end of the programme the participants are given a 2-hour course review and finally take a written examination on theory. Their technical skills are evaluated during the practical lessons.
Participation prerequisite: Successful evaluation and passing of the written examination of ASA103.
PROGRAMME INFORMATION
The successful candidates receive the respective certificates of the internationally recognised organisation American Sailing Association and with their certificates they receive also their personal LOGBOOK.
It is a principle of the School to give to the students and members the opportunity to acquire experiences. The main event is the week-long annual flotilla to the Greek islands in May during which participants are exposed to very valuable experiences which are considered to be part of the programme.
In-class Nicosia: Monday and Wednesday 20:00-22:00
In-class Limassol: Tuesday and Thursday 20:00-22:00
Practicals: Saturday or Sunday 08:30 – 12:30 or 12:30 – 16:30 – at Larnaca Marina (depending on number of participants).

Pasimis has a team of eight active ASA certified trainers ensuring the continuity of the course, bringing to the course a variety of experience and style and certainly adhering to course safety prerequisites. Practicals are always conducted by two trainers.
The cost of participation in each module is €300 that is payable at the beginning of each. Therefore, the total cost of the programme is €900. The book that covers the whole programme has an additional cost of €50.

SAILING TEAMS
Our love for sailing and the excitement of racing have brought together club members to form the PASIMIS Sailing Teams. PASIMIS Sailing Teams have been active almost from the very beginning of the club. We focus on the participation, enjoyment, participation and team spirit.
Today we participate in local races with two boats, Glaroni and Diva. Two different and distinct boats that offer different sailing experiences.
We participate in the National championship, friendly races and events and organise our own yearly racing event.
